La Ribera in Biodiesel

The La Ribera in Biodiesel service aims to use a waste product, such as cooking vegetable oil, to produce a renewable and ecological fuel, while at the same time preventing pollution of rivers and streams and reducing the cost of treating urban wastewater.

The project is mainly based on two types of actions:

  1. Installation of a network of orange containers in public areas and municipal buildings to physically collect residual vegetable oil.
  2. Carrying out awareness campaigns aimed at the general public.

The domestic vegetable oil collection project began in 2008. In December 2019, the new contract for the DOMESTIC VEGETABLE OIL COLLECTION SERVICE of the Ribera Consortium was awarded to the management company ECOACTIV JBD, SL for a period of 3 years with an option for a 2-year extension.

Objectives for this new period:

  • Improve the service, translated into:
    • Increase the volume of domestic vegetable oil collected
    • Install a greater number of containers or disposal points in La Ribera

This company now manages the system, so the following actions will be carried out:

  • Gradually replace the container network
  • Expand the existing network according to the needs of each municipality
  • Raise public awareness through dissemination and communication actions

For the year 2024, a total of 68 containers were installed in public areas, and 20,224 kg of oil were collected in the participating municipalities.
