Local and renewable energy production is one of the key pillars for sustainable growth in the territory.
With this initiative, the Projects Department of AER aims to achieve the target set by Directive 2009/28/EC promoting the use of renewable energy, which establishes that by 2020 at least 20% of the energy produced in EU member states must come from renewable sources.
In this context, the Energy Department of the Ribera Consortium launched in 2009 a joint tender for a group of municipalities in La Ribera to promote the installation of photovoltaic generators on the roofs of municipal buildings. The municipalities of Benicull de Xúquer, Guadassuar, La Pobla Llarga, and Llaurí joined the initiative, installing 10 municipal buildings with a total of 427 kWp of solar photovoltaic energy.
In 2010, a second tender was launched for the roofs of the municipalities of Carlet, Villanueva de Castellón, Corbera, Algemesí, Antella, Alberic, and Alginet, resulting in installations on 27 municipal buildings with a peak power of 1,388 kWp.
In total, the renewable energy production from these installations is approximately 2,541,000 kWh per year, equivalent to the electricity consumption of a municipality like Carlet. This prevents the emission of 1,016 tons of CO₂ annually.
The Energy Department of the Ribera Consortium continues promoting the installation of renewable energy in the region. Currently, one of the goals is to encourage the installation of photovoltaic solar plants on municipal buildings and facilities.
Additionally, as an exemplary action, the Energy Department of the Ribera Consortium owns a grid-connected photovoltaic plant with a power of 22.14 kWp at the Municipal Cemetery of Carlet.
