Objectives of the TEESCHOOLS Project

The overall objective of the TEESCHOOLS project (acronym for Tools for Energy Efficiency in Schools) is to provide local authorities with innovative solutions from a technical and financial perspective, enabling the energy renovation of Mediterranean schools towards Nearly-zero energy buildings (NZEB).

The innovative aspect involves preparing a toolkit that allows local authorities to implement school renovation projects. With this toolkit, it will be possible to carry out the energy renovation of a large number of educational buildings.

The toolkit will include:

  • A pre-audit instrument to simplify the audit procedure and decision-making;
  • A carbon footprint calculator for the school building;
  • A selection of financial models for school renovation;
  • Training and capacity-building activities for teaching staff and municipal technicians.

These tools will be tested in each participating country and adapted to the specific regulations and different national, regional, and local energy plans.

In the Ribera de Xúquer, 16 educational centers will be analyzed, as well as one CEIP in Almenara and Benilloba. Thus, the toolkit will be tested in 18 schools and financial/investment schemes will be defined to facilitate their energy renovation towards a nearly-zero energy building.

Impact on participating municipalities

The TEESCHOOLS project will be implemented in 18 educational centers in our territory.

In summary, the main activities that will have a direct impact on the participating municipalities include:

  • Conducting an energy audit of the school to identify the main energy uses and propose solutions to reduce them;
  • Calculating the carbon footprint (carbon footprint) as a measure of the school’s environmental impact, particularly regarding climate change;
  • Designing a financial-economic scheme to achieve the energy rehabilitation of the school;
  • Defining an Action Plan for building renovation and integrating this roadmap into the municipal Energy and Climate Action Plan (PACES), contributing to local CO₂ reduction targets;
  • Carrying out an awareness campaign for the school community (teachers and students) to reduce energy consumption;
  • Conducting training courses for municipal officers and other relevant local stakeholders to facilitate efficient energy management of the schools.
